Cubic feet and cubic yards, converted both ways
Cubic Feet in a Cubic Yard Calculator
27 cubic feet is 1 cubic yard, so 100 cubic feet is 3.704 cubic yards. Enter a volume below to convert it.
Your estimate
3.704 cu yd
100 cu ft ÷ 27 = 3.704 cu yd.

The bags are whole ones: a part bag rounds up. Bag volumes are as printed by their makers.
How to convert cubic feet to cubic yards
- Start with the volume in cubic feet. The example is 100 cubic feet, the figure a bag label or a box measured in feet gives.
- Divide by 27: 100 ÷ 27 = 3.704 cubic yards.
- To go back, multiply the cubic yards by 27: 2.5 × 27 = 67.5 cubic feet.
- Round only the figure you print. The division is exact, so nothing is lost until the last digit.
One rule covers both directions: 27 cubic feet is 1 cubic yard. The converter, the bag counts and the table all use that one division, so every row below is the same arithmetic. The example is 100 cu ft, which is 3.704 cu yd.
How many bags of each size make a cubic yard
The 0.5 and 0.6 cu ft figures are printed yields of concrete mix bags. The 2 and 3 cu ft figures are the bag volumes of garden soil, and Kellogg prints its 2 cu ft Regional bag as sold outside Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah. Makers print their own sizes, so read the bag you buy.
| Bag | Product | Bags per cubic yard | Whole bags to order |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 cu ft | CTS Rapid Set concrete mix, 60 lb bag | 54 | 54 |
| 0.6 cu ft | QUIKRETE Concrete Mix 1101, 80 lb bag | 45 | 45 |
| 2 cu ft | Kellogg garden soil, Regional bag | 13.5 | 14 |
| 3 cu ft | Kellogg garden soil, Western bag | 9 | 9 |
Bags per yard are 27 divided by the cubic feet of one bag: 27 ÷ 0.5 = 54 for the smallest bag, and 27 ÷ 3 = 9 for the largest. A bag size that is not listed here works the same way.

What to buy next
Yards come from the sides and the depth of a bed or a pour. Enter them on the how many cubic yards from length, width and depth page, which orders in half yards.
A yard of concrete mix comes out in bags too. The how many bags of concrete in a yard page turns the same yard into bags of each mix.
Stone and soil are bought by the ton as well as the yard. The cubic yards to tons calculator gives the weight of a yard of each.
Cubic feet to cubic yards questions
Why is a cubic yard 27 cubic feet?
Three 1 ft cubes fit along each edge of a yard, nine to a layer and three layers high, so 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet fill it.
What is one cubic foot in cubic yards?
One cubic foot is 1 ÷ 27 = 0.037 cubic yards, so a 1 cu ft load is a little over a thirtieth of a yard.
How many cubic feet are in half a cubic yard?
Half a cubic yard is 0.5 × 27 = 13.5 cubic feet. A 2 cu ft bag holds 2 cubic feet, so 13.5 ÷ 2 = 6.75 bags, and the part bag makes it 7.
How many bags make a cubic yard?
54 bags of 0.5 cu ft, 45 bags of 0.6 cu ft, 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft, 9 bags of 3 cu ft. A part bag rounds up on the order, so 13.5 of the 2 cu ft bags becomes 14.
How do I convert a bag’s cubic feet to cubic yards?
Divide the bag’s cubic feet by 27. A 3 cu ft bag is 3 ÷ 27 = 0.111 cu yd, so nine of them fill a yard.
Does the material change the cubic yard?
No. The material changes how much a yard weighs, not how much space it fills, so the weight of a yard comes from the cubic yards to tons calculator.
