Polymeric Sand Calculator

192 sq ft with 0.25 in joints needs 3 50 lb bags of Gator Maxx G2 in this coverage range.

Your numbers

Coverage is printed for 1/8–3/8 in or 3/4–1 1/4 in joints; no interpolation between groups.

At least 1 1/2 in filled, and at least 1/8 in below the top. Published coverage does not adjust for depth.

This product table is only for 2.375 in high pavers.

Your estimate

3 50 lb bags

192 sq ft ÷ 65 sq ft per bag, rounded up. This uses the lower end of the printed coverage range.

Actual coverage changes with paver shape, size and filled joint depth. This table is keyed to paver thickness, not your measured depth. Keep the joints dry until the manufacturer's water-activation step.

How many bags for paver joints?

  1. Measure the paved area. For a rectangle, multiply its length by its width: 16 × 12 ft = 192 sq ft.
  2. Choose the Gator Maxx G2 color and the joint-width group. The maker's 2.375 in paver table gives 65–85 sq ft per 50 lb bag for the default narrow, standard-color example.
  3. Divide 192 sq ft by both published coverage values, then round each result up to whole bags. The lower coverage gives 3 bags to plan for; the upper coverage gives 3.

This is a product-specific bag estimate. Alliance Gator says actual coverage changes with paver size, shape and joint width. A different product or paver thickness needs its own coverage data. The pounds shown in the result are the weight of sealed bags, not the mass of sand that will fit inside the joints. Alliance Gator reference guide (2025)

There is no printed range for joints between 3/8 and 3/4 in in this table. The form does not interpolate that gap. For another paver height, joint width or layout, try the manufacturer's calculator and make a small on-site test. Alliance Gator reference guide (2025)

Check the joints before ordering

The bag count assumes a suitable joint, not a surface coating. The current Gator Maxx G2 technical sheet calls for at least 1.5 in of joint depth and a finished fill at least 0.125 in below the top or chamfer. Check the paver profile and the actual void before buying.

Pavers and joints must be dry while the sand is swept in. Vibrate or compact as the manufacturer directs, sweep again to fill the voids, remove the surface residue, then follow its water activation and weather instructions. Moisture before activation can change how densely the material packs; this calculator cannot correct for that.

This material fills joints between pavers. For sand below the pavers, use the paver bedding sand calculator. The paver patio planner combines the paving layers in one estimate.

Polymeric sand questions

How many bags of polymeric sand for a 16 × 12 ft patio?

For Gator Maxx G2 in Beige, Slate Grey or Ivory, with 0.25 in joints and 2.375 in high pavers, the maker lists 65–85 sq ft per 50 lb bag. The 192 sq ft example needs 3 whole bags.

How does joint width change polymeric sand coverage?

Gator Maxx G2 prints one coverage range for joints 1/8–3/8 in and a separate range for 3/4–1 1/4 in. On the same 192 sq ft patio, its standard colors take 3 bags for the narrow group or 5–9 for the wide group. It prints no coverage estimate for widths between those groups.

Why does this calculator show a range of bags?

The manufacturer gives a range of square feet per bag because paver shape, size and joint width affect the amount that fits. We divide area by both ends of that range and round each result up. The larger bag count uses the lower coverage end; it is a planning quantity, not a guarantee.

Can I use this number for any polymeric sand?

No. These are Gator Maxx G2, 50 lb bag rates for 2.375 in pavers. Other products, bag sizes, paver heights and joint depths use their own tables. The bag weight is package weight, not a cubic foot yield.

What if the joints or pavers are wet?

Do not apply Gator Maxx G2 while paver surfaces or joints are damp. The manufacturer says moisture can activate the polymer early and keep sand from packing densely. Sweep and vibrate it into dry joints, then remove the excess and activate with water as the current technical sheet directs.

A planning aid, not an engineering calculation: your local code and building inspector have the final word. Terms
