Square feet are the floor or surface you measure. Trim, walls, waste and overlap are not in this number; add what the job needs.
How to calculate square feet
- Measure each area's length and width in feet and inches. The example is 12 ft × 15 ft.
- Multiply length by width: 12 × 15 = 180 sq ft. Turn inches into a part of a foot first: 6 in is 0.5 ft, so 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft.
- Split an odd shape into rectangles, triangles and circles, find each one and add them. A triangle is half of base × height; a circle is π × radius², with the radius half the diameter.
- Take away any cut-out, such as a hole or a bed, then convert: 180 sq ft ÷ 9 = 20 sq yd. The square meters are 180 × 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 16.72 sq m.
Square feet are length times width, both in feet. Enter each side in feet and inches, and the page adds the inches to the feet before it multiplies. The example room is 180 sq ft, and the drawing shows it to scale beside the form.
Rooms, circles, triangles and cut-outs
A rectangle takes its length and width. An L-shaped room is two rectangles, each measured on its own and added together. A circle takes its diameter, and a triangle takes its base and its height, with the area half of base times height.
Add up to six areas. Tick the box on any area that comes out of the total, such as a hole for a pond or a bed inside a lawn, and it is subtracted. The total is always the areas added less the cut-outs.
Common room and yard sizes in square feet and square yards
| Size | Square feet | Square yards |
|---|---|---|
| 10 ft × 10 ft | 100 | 11.11 |
| 10 ft × 12 ft | 120 | 13.33 |
| 12 ft × 12 ft | 144 | 16 |
| 12 ft × 15 ft | 180 | 20 |
| 15 ft × 20 ft | 300 | 33.33 |
| 20 ft × 20 ft | 400 | 44.44 |
| 20 ft × 30 ft | 600 | 66.67 |
| 30 ft × 40 ft | 1,200 | 133.33 |
The example is the 12 ft × 15 ft row, 180 sq ft or 20 sq yd. Any size not in the table goes through the form above, with its own shape.
Square yards and square feet
A square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft, so it is 9 sq ft. Divide square feet by 9 for square yards, and multiply square yards by 9 for square feet. The example room is 180 sq ft, which is 20 sq yd.
Your estimate
20 sq yd
180 sq ft ÷ 9 = 20 sq yd.
Square feet of a house
For a house, add up the rooms: length times width for each one, then the total of the rooms. Or measure the outside of each floor, multiply its length by its width, and add the floors. The outside measure runs past the walls, so it is larger than the space inside.
The square footage on a listing or an appraisal follows the rules of the appraiser or the listing, which may count or leave out areas such as porches and garages differently from your own measure. This page gives the number you measure, and those rules are theirs.
Square feet to linear feet
Boards are sold by length, so a floor or a wall of boards is counted in linear feet: the area divided by the width of one board in feet. 180 sq ft of boards 6 in wide is 180 ÷ 0.5 = 360 linear feet, before cuts and gaps. The board sizes are on the board foot calculator and on the actual lumber sizes page.
Your estimate
360 linear ft
180 sq ft ÷ 0.5 ft wide = 360 linear ft.

How much material for this area
For a lawn, the sod calculator turns this area into pallets and rolls of sod, and the topsoil calculator gives the soil for the layer under it.
For beds and paths, the mulch calculator and the gravel calculator take the same area and a depth. A patio of pavers uses the paver patio calculator, and a poured slab the concrete slab calculator.
Sand for a base goes to the sand calculator. Each of these starts from an area and a depth, and the cubic yard calculator turns that depth into the yards to order.
Square footage questions
How do I calculate square feet?
Multiply the length by the width, both in feet. A 12 ft × 15 ft room is 12 × 15 = 180 sq ft. Inches become a decimal of a foot: 6 in is 0.5 ft, so 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft.
How do I measure square footage of a room?
Measure the floor from wall to wall, length and then width, and multiply. A bay or an alcove is a second rectangle: measure it on its own and add it. The 12 ft × 15 ft example gives 180 sq ft.
What does a square footage calculator add up?
It adds the areas you enter and takes away any cut-outs. This page takes up to six areas, each a rectangle, an L of two rectangles, a circle or a triangle, and gives the total in square feet, square yards, square meters and acres.
How many square feet are in a square yard?
Nine. A square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft, so 1 sq yd is 9 sq ft. The 180 sq ft example is 180 ÷ 9 = 20 sq yd.
How do I calculate square feet of a house?
Add up the rooms, or measure the outside of each floor, multiply length by width, and add the floors. The outside measure runs past the walls, so it comes out larger than the living space inside. Appraisers and listings follow their own counting rules, which can differ from a rough figure.
How do I calculate square feet of an irregular shape?
Split it into rectangles, triangles and circles, find each one and add them. Cut out what is not floor: take the 4 ft × 5 ft closet out of the 12 ft × 15 ft room and you have 180 − 20 = 160 sq ft.
How do I convert square feet to linear feet?
Divide the square feet by the width of one board in feet. 180 sq ft of boards 6 in wide is 180 ÷ 0.5 = 360 linear feet, before cuts and gaps. The converter on this page does the division.
How do I find the square feet of a circle?
Use π × radius², with the radius half the diameter. A 10 ft circle has a 5 ft radius, so π × 5 × 5 = 78.54 sq ft.
